The Rosie O’Donnell show was a television mainstay over six seasons. I wore blank VHS tape thin recording it whenever my favorite celebrities made an appearance. And because the late 90s/early 00s were a pop music fantasy, Rosie had some amazing guests. If you were promoting an album, you *had* to stop and chat with her as she cracked jokes, gave life advice, and fired off koosh balls.
The Backstreet Boys were no different and they had appeared on her show several times, often taking up the entire hour. As the Boys prepared for the 2000 Grammys, Rosie, who was the host of the award show that year, stopped by to meet them back stage. The quick clip is ‘aw’ inspiring!
Rosie sings I Want It That Way (badly). She hilariously tests out some jokes on the Boys. She imitates Brian’s pensive music video walk and hugs him because she’s always worried about his health after heart surgery. Then she tells Aj he’s done getting tattoos (HA!). A great little trip down memory lane.
Watching this video led me down a k-hole of Rosie interviews and I remembered another amazing clip involving the Boys later that year as they promoted Black and Blue on her show. Backstreet Blitz was a Backstreet trivia game the fellas played against five lucky fans. The questions were actually interesting/informative (unlike, say, the mundane questions people ask at soundchecks *ahem*) and there’s one question about a ‘garage band’ Nick used to be in that produced one of the best Nick reactions ever. I was able to remember this video existed solely because I remembered that reaction.
Rose was kind enough to make sure the entire Rosie episode from their 2000 Black and Blue promotional tour was uploaded to The Darkside’s Youtube page in case watching one segment wasn’t enough (spoiler alert: it won’t be enough). There are a couple of great performances in there along with more interview time.
